Charleston, South Carolina: Modern Living in a Historic City

Charleston, South Carolina is situated on a peninsula located between the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, and has a population of about 120,000 (on the peninsula alone). The Charleston metro area, also identified as the Tri-County Area, consists of three counties: Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester. The population for the Tri-County area is just over 600,000 residents.

While the modern age is definitely alive and well in this active city, the steeple-dotted skyline and cobblestone streets remind one of a time when horse-drawn carriages were the norm in Charleston. Homes are available overlooking the streets that have been in existence since 1670, when the area was first settled.

A "Charleston-style" house is ideal for the humid climate that we have here.  The "one room wide" construction offered residents cross-ventilation in the days before Central Air.  These two-story "piazzas" provide some cool shade in the heat of the day.  The piazzas are also the location of the front door, which keeps the entrance hall more private, being centered on the side of the home.  Many of these types of homes in the downtown, Charleston location still are prevalent today.  Many of the older constructed homes as well as the newly constructed homes look magnificent architecturally, while still maintaining their effectiveness today.
