This post-Civil War house was built circa 1875 as side-hall double parlor plan with Georgian details added in the early 1900s. The original house was destroyed by the massive fire of 1861. The iron fence is typical in the South-of-Broad neighborhood, providing visual access but still a sense of security. The inclusion of the piazza on the west is a staple of Charleston architecture, serving as an exterior room that provides a comfortable environment to see and be seen. The pediment on the south end of the piazza is intended to reflect the piazza screen of a typical Charleston single house, and along with the pediment over the front door supported by ionic columns, was a part of the 1905 Colonial Revival alterations.
