Summerville Real Estate: Modern Living in a Historic City

Botanical gardens and plantations are only a few of the outdoor offerings of Summerville. Dorchester Colonial State Park supports all manner of activities, from horseback riding to kayaking. Four golf courses offer the finest in South Carolina fairways to Summerville golfers. And, of course, nearly every part of Summerville has a nod to the past, whether it be a museum or one of the many buildings on the Historic Register.

Summerville history began back in the late 1600s, with the colonization of the Charleston SC area. Homes were built in Summerville in the early 1800s. The community was incorporated in 1847 to protect the pine trees that shielded the residents from the summer heat and were thought at the time to guard against malaria. The first ordinace, brought about in 1848, was to restrict the amount of trees cut in the area and is the oldest law of its kind still on the books.
