West Ashley Real Estate
West Ashley is located west of Charleston, on the banks of the Ashley River and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is Charleston's acknowledged birthplace, having been settled in 1670. Nearly 350 years later, people looking to settle in the Charleston area can look forward to affordable homes near downtown Charleston, but without the price tag. West Ashley home seekers will be pleased with the many scenic views of waterfront, marshland and towering oak trees that took root a century ago. Read more about West Ashley homes.

West Ashley Real Estate: Modern Historical Living
West Ashley homes range from moderately priced single-family homes to lots adjoining water deep enough for large boat moorage. Homes with beautiful marshland views are being built to meet demand. There are also a variety of condo developments in West Ashley that could be attractive to those who want a beautiful building but don't have the time to spend maintaining property. West Ashley homes may be largely modern in construction, but they are definitely rooted in history, as anyone who has the privilege of travelling along the oak-lined streets can see.
The modern and the historic meet comfortably here in one of Charleston's oldest neighborhoods. Homes in West Ashley are close to the modern bustle of downtown Charleston, but are separated from it by the Ashley River. West Ashley is also home to Citadel Mall, the largest indoor shopping mall in the region. It, along with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, is one of the largest employers in the West Ashley area. The original retail district has enjoyed a resurgance of life, with many art & design businesses locating there recently.
West Ashley attractions draw many people to experience the thrill of stepping back into history. One can visit Charles Towne Landing, a state historic site covering 663 acres of land along the Ashley River. This site also features the Animal Forest, a zoo featuring animals that would have been in the area in 1670, and the Adventure, a complete reproduction of a 17th century cargo ship. Middleton Place is another historic feature, an 18th-century plantation that has been carefully preserved to give visitors the genuine look and feel of the antebellum South. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens was founded in 1676, making it the oldest public gardens in the U.S. It was opened to the public in 1872. It adjoins the property of Drayton Hall, which finished construction in 1742. It is the oldest surviving example of Georgian-Palladian architecture in the South.
In addition to these fine historical institutions, West Ashley schools are also very well-thought-of. West Ashley High School is the one high school here. There are three middle schools and five elementary schools. West Ashley also has a number of private schools, including the prestigious Porter-Gaud School, founded in 1867.
Despite having a strong area identity and over 54,000 residents in 2007, West Ashley is not considered a city in its own right, but rather as a part of Charleston (as far as the U.S. Postal Service is concerned). However, the spirit of the region is distinct and its residents are proud of its rich history and modern living opportunities.
