Johns Island, SC Real Estate: Rural Charleston Area Living

Johns Island homes are varied, despite being in the midst of an active farming community that produces the “best” fruits and vegetables in the Charleston area. Homes in Johns Island range from rambling rural properties to elegant condo buildings overlooking the Atlantic. Homes here are very fairly priced compared to similar neighborhoods in the Charleston area. People looking in the neighborhood right now can take advantage of the newer subdivisions built here in recent years. Homes along the Stono River offer spectacular views and wildlife watching. Older Johns Island homes are more randomly placed and many reflect the rural origins of this community.

Families considering Johns Island have a variety of public and private schools to choose from. There are many children's activities sponsored by family and historical organizations. Close proximity to Charleston makes a family-friendly community easy to choose in the area. The island offers people a home where they can truly enjoy their family leisure time.

What to Look For When Purchasing a Johns Island Home

Johns Island House Most folks that consider Johns Island want a relaxed lifestyle, close enough to Charleston, yet far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday fast-paced life. Johns Island is an area where time slows down, and one tends to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, rather than constantly looking at the clock. If you get the itch however, downtown Charleston is only a 10 to 20 minute drive away (depending on where you are on Johns Island). Alternatively, you can choose one of the many restaurants to dine at on the island itself, or plenty of other things to across the bridge onto James Island or West Ashley.

Property values are typically lower here, for other comparable areas that  surround Charleston- and you get more “bang for your buck”, if you will. Larger lot sizes, less neighborhood restrictions (CC&R’s), and plenty of new construction neighborhoods popping up as well. Instead of paying a higher premium for less house and a smaller lot size, you can purchase a house on Johns Island typically of larger size, and space between you and your next door neighbor. There are still a number of properties available with acreage, and an active horse community.

Johns Island Waterfront Being surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and the large Stono River, affords plenty of options for those looking to purchase Johns Island Waterfront property. Whether you’re looking for a less expensive home on tidal creek, or a deep water estate with a full dock, fixed pier head, and floater, this is a great location for the avid boater and fisherman. Some of the best shrimping and Reds are caught along the Stono River.

Johns Island also appeals to those that enjoy golf. There are over 10 golf courses within a 15 minute drive of the island, with some being the best along the East Coast. Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island both neighbor Johns Island, giving a number of options for Oceanfront golf.

A relaxed lifestyle just outside the city limits of Charleston makes the Johns Island location a true gem.
