Wadmalaw Island, SC Real Estate

The island most untouched by development in the Charleston area, Wadmalaw Island is nestled between John’s Island, Edisto Island and the mainland.  If you’re looking for unspoiled rural life only 30 minutes away from Charleston, this is an area to explore.  The development of this island is strict, so you won’t see condominium complexes along the meandering roads; just working farms and estates on large parcels of land adjoining the waterways.

Wadmalaw Island Real Estate: Relaxed Living in a Historic City

Working farms still hold sway over the 40 square miles of Wadmalaw Island.  The only community is the town of Rockville, which has been a community since 1835.  It hosts the annual Rockville Regatta, which has been a tradition since 1890.  This and the Gullah Festival that Wadmalaw Island hosts to celebrate African-American cultural contributions to the region are the two main Island events that bring people from all over to celebrate the unique history of Wadmalaw.

There are other attractions here as well.  Wadmalaw Island is home to the only remaining tea plantation in America: The American Tea Farm.  The farm conducts tours of its “Tea Plant Maze” and sells a variety of American-grown teas.  The Irvin House Vineyard conducts tours and regular events, including an annual grape-stomping festival.

Wadmalaw Island real estate is largely comprised of working farms and rural estates.  Subdivisions do not exist here and big box stores are unknown.  Outdoor pursuits dominate the activities of the islanders, who farm, fish, crab and shrimp.  Sporting activities lean towards boating, fishing and horseback riding.  Life is paced here, with none of the bustle that can be had less than an hour away.

If you’re looking for the rural life, but don’t want to be too far away from Charleston, Wadmalaw should be on your list of places to explore.  Wadmalaw Island homes range from $100,000 fixer-uppers to homes listed in the millions.  One thing they all share is the rural tranquility of the classic Southern island life.
